Revelation - Lesson 8

By Stafford North

Review of the Book of Revelation

Background Information for the Teacher

Objectives:

  1. The student can identify the main symbols in Revelation and explain its basic story.
  2. The student can demonstrate from the Book of Revelation Christ's victory over His enemies.

Preparation:

  1. Post for students to see any pictures you want to use in this summary of Revelation. Referring to pictures could be helpful as you let students re-tell the story of the book.
  2. If you choose to use them, have ready your visuals-overhead projector and transparencies, PowerPoint, or chalkboard.
  3. Have ready enough new copies of the Story of Revelation Worksheets for everyone in class. You can spend most of the time in the review letting students, from memory, work together as a class to complete a fresh copy of this worksheet.
  4. Have copies of Test 7 for students to use as they enter class.
  5. Have pens/pencils ready for use.
  6. All students should have access to a Bible.

Theme:

Christ wants to prepare His church for the coming Roman persecution through which Satan hopes to destroy the church. He does this by promising that He will give them great blessings to be faithful and that He will destroy the persecuting power after the time of persecution is over.

Lesson Plan for Conducting Class

Introduction: (about 10 minutes)

  1. Make the test available to students as they enter.
  2. Call the roll, welcome visitors, and make any necessary announcements.

    2. Jesus Is Lord. (Think of those who died for making this confession.)
    3. Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus. (This should be our commitment after learning the story of the Book of Revelation.)
  4. Prayer of thanks for those who gave their lives so that Satan would not win in the conflict described in Revelation and that we will have an equal commitment to Christ.

Learning Experiences: (25 minutes)

  1. We have now studied through the entire Book of Revelation. One of the most important aspects of studying this book is to keep our eyes on the big picture the book presents and not get lost in the details. From Revelation 1:3 it is clear that Christ intended this book to be read aloud to congregations so they could hear and obey what it said. So the basic message is in the big picture.
  2. First let's review the five principles given at the first to help us know what general interpretation to follow through the book. Q: What are the five principles? (Let the class give you all of them they can. Write them in brief form on the board or on a blank transparency. Help them as necessary if they have drawn a blank. Thus, if they are having trouble remembering the one about symbols, you could put your hands in the "symbol" position. Or if they can't come up with the principle about its happening soon, you might ask, "When were the predictions in Revelation to happen?" At the end of this exercise, you should have the five principles up where students can see them. They are also on the PowerPoint for this lesson.
    1. Revelation is Written in Symbols
    2. Revelation is Written Prinmarily about Events Which will "Shortly Come to Pass."
    3. Revelation is Written to Comfort Persecuted Christians.
    4. Revelation Identifies the Main Characters in the Drama: Dragon is Satan, 1st Beast is the Roman Empire, 2nd Beast is the Cult of Emperor Worship.
    5. Revelation Identifies the Prostitute as the City of Rome.
  3. As we have gone through this book we have completed an outline that had two columns. On the right side of the sheet, we studied what the book says in symbols. On the left column we have seen what these symbols represent. I am giving you a fresh copy of this worksheet. We are going to go through it now and see if we as a class can complete it from memory. To move quickly, I will read through the left side of an item first and when I come to a blank I will pause and wait for someone to supply the answer. Hopefully all will answer at the same time since all will know the answer. You can then quickly write in the answer and we will move to the next blank. (Teacher: proceed now through the Story of Revelation Worksheet asdescribed. Tell the students that for the test next class period, you will give them this worksheet with certain questions marked for them to complete.)

Application: (9 minutes)

  1. Give the students a blank sheet of paper and ask them to write on it the answer to the following question. How will our study of the Book of Revelation change your life? (Answers might include such things as these: I will take a stronger stand for the truth, I will not tell a lie, I will live with greater hope, I will have more faith that God will care for me, etc.)
  2. As time permits, let students share what they have written.Assignment:
  3. Tell students that you will give them a Story of Revelation Worksheet with certain points identified that they are to complete since it would take too long for them to do it all in class.
  4. Urge the students to study their worksheets as preparation for the test. Another good way to prepare would be to tell someone, a friend, parent, or sibling about the worksheet-walking them through the general outline.

Assignment:

  1. Tell students that you will give them a Story of Revelation Worksheet with certain points identified that they are to complete since it would take too long for them to do it all in class.   DOWNLOAD THE WORKSHEET BELOW LISTED AFTER THE POWERPOINT.  DOWNLOAD INCLUDES BOTH THE STUDENT WORKSHEET AND THE TEACHER WORKSHEET (WITH ANSWERS).
  2. Urge the students to study their worksheets as preparation for the test.  Another good way to prepare would be to tell someone, a friend, parent, or sibling about the worksheet—walking them through the general outline.

Evaluation:

  1. The next test will be an evaluation over the eight lessons on Revelation.
